Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Virginia Kimbrough Newell (1917–2025)

“Love life. Engage in it. Give it all you’ve got. Love it with a passion because life truly does give back, many times over, what you put into it.”

- Dr. Maya Angelou

Today, we gather in love, gratitude, and remembrance to honor the extraordinary life of Dr. Virginia Kimbrough Newell, a trailblazer in education, civil rights, and public service. Her memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM at Wait Chapel, Wake Forest University (1834 Wake Forest Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106).

Dr. Newell devoted more than a century to lifting up her community and expanding what was possible through learning and leadership. A pioneering mathematics professor, she founded the computer science program at Winston-Salem State University, leaving a legacy that shaped generations of students and ensured the growth of knowledge, innovation, and opportunity.

Her belief in the transformative power of education led her to establish the Math and Science Academy of Excellence and the Best Choice Center — institutions that continue to nurture and empower young minds.

But her brilliance extended beyond the classroom. As one of the first African American women to serve as an alderman in Winston-Salem, Dr. Newell broke barriers in public service, championing justice, equity, and progress for all. Her bold leadership and unwavering commitment to her community have had a lasting impact that will be felt for generations.

A true Phenomenal Woman, Dr. Newell embodied the spirit of resilience, compassion, and excellence. She lived the very essence of Dr. Maya Angelou’s words:

“Love life. Engage in it. Give it all you’ve got. Love it with a passion because life truly does give back, many times over, what you put into it.”

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, loved ones, and all whose lives she touched. As we reflect on her remarkable 107 years, may we carry her legacy forward — with passion, purpose, and the courage to create change.

Rest well, Dr. Newell. Your light continues to shine.
